World Amateur Golfers Championship History and Facts
World Amateur Golfers Championship & Team USA
The World Amateur Golfers Championship was founded in 1995 by Sven Tumba, a well-known ice hockey, soccer, and golf athlete from Sweden. Mr. Tumba designed the championship to give all amateur golfers the thrill & prestige of representing their nation in a global championship against players of similar skill level.
The World Finals
Today, World Amateur Golfers Championship is the worlds largest amateur golf championship with national championships in over 40 countries. The championship complies with USGA & R&A amateur rules. Winners from five handicap flights come together and represent their nation as a team and individually within their flights. The world final is held at great resorts (such as renowned 5-star resorts) and played at some of the best courses in the host nation. Team USA representatives receive an all-expenses paid trip to compete in the world finals.
The Invitational
Each year there’s an invitational tournament in addition to the world finals. The Invitational is a separate tournament that gives golfers the opportunity to share in the exciting “World Amateur Golfers Championship experience” of a world-wide tour-like championship event… without first having to qualify. This tournament is designed to cater to business executives, celebrities, VIP clients, sponsors, national organizers, and golf enthusiasts. It is perhaps the greatest experiential marketing opportunity in golf. The invitational offers and endorses networking and helps achieve, build or further develop long-lasting global business relationships. Invitational participants are a diverse group representing a multitude of products and service, with a shared interest to expand their network with new friends and business partners.
Supporters
Tournament patron Arnold Palmer supported the championship for many years. Jesper Parnevik has taken over Arnold Palmers position as Patron. Annika Sörenstam took over as Honorary Chairman of the Advisory Board after the sad passing of Seve Ballesteros.
Team USA
World Amateur Golfers Championship Team USA is owned and operated by Jim Smith and Tim Greathouse of STG Golf Group. Team USA operates across the United States in regions headed by Team USA Tournament Directors. In addition to regional/local tournaments members have the opportunity to play in five majors throughout the year. And, just like all the other 40+ countries, Team USA will send the winners of five flights to the world finals….all expenses paid.
